Berket Simon causing disquiet over rising clout

(ESAT News)– The Communication Affairs Minister Bereket Simon is causing disquiet and tension among the TPLF-dominated government as he is assuming a more prominent position, sources told ESAT.
During a recent trip with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Bereket took the unprecedented step of signing an agreement with Kenyan Premier Raila Odinaga.

Despite having a less important position as a communication affairs minister, Bereket assumed the role of the second man in charge of the delegation. Informed sources say that the increasing power of Bereket is becoming more evident as he seemed to be the man with greater leverage in the system.

Bereket was also the head of the delegation that represented Ethiopian during a signing ceremony of a peace agreement between the two Sudans as Hailemariam Desalegn was heading to New York to attend the General Assembly in late September. It was also noted that the Acting Foreign Minister Berhane Gebrekirstos seems to play a less important role in foreign affairs matters as Bereket is overshadowing him even in matters of foreign affairs.

The delegation to Kenya included the Minister of Finance Sofian Ahmed, the Acting Foreign Minister Berhane Gebrekirstos and other members of the cabinet.
The senior members of the TPLF are said to be concerned over the role of Bereket Simon and his increasing clout in the government.
