US hails Emir’s mediation efforts

The United States has welcomed the efforts made by HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani to mediate the border dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea that led to the signing of a peace agreement.

In a press conference held at the White House, US Department of State Spokesman Phillip Crowley said: “This agreement is an important first step towards achieving renewed peace and stability in the region”, urging Eritrea and Djibouti to work together on a rapid, peaceful, and sustainable settlement.

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh have signed an agreement authorising Qatar to undertake mediation efforts to find a solution to their border dispute. They have authorised HH the Emir, who signed the agreement as a mediator and witness, with the full authority to issue an executive working document to the agreement.
